This extraordinary choker preserves an original piece of Yemeni silver work, an increasingly rare survivor of a remarkable jewellery tradition.
Over time, many historic Yemeni ornaments were dismantled or melted down so that their silver could be reused or sold for weaponry. This choker was preserved and thoughtfully up-cycled, retaining its original character while being reimagined with antique pink coral, Yemeni Tut beads, triangular silver elements and a traditional central pendant.
Its broad, structured form is created from geometric squares and rectangles, arranged to sit dramatically around the neckline. The linear panels lead towards the central Yemeni pendant, where articulated silver dangles introduce movement and a soft sound as the wearer moves. Triangular details add another layer of traditional geometry and give the substantial design a strong, sculptural balance.
The antique Tut beads were handmade in Yemen using granulation, tiny pieces of silver individually formed, arranged and soldered together to create their distinctive textured, mulberry-like surface. Antique coral brings warmth and contrast to the aged silver, with natural variations and traces of wear that speak of its long history.
Completed with matching earrings, this is an entirely original, one-of-a-kind SuhaniMara creation. Its rare components, handworked construction and preserved central form make it exceptionally difficult to reproduce or find today, a piece of history protected, respected and given a new life.
