Ancient Egyptian adornment understood the power of presence. Broad collars were constructed from multiple rows of beads that spread across the chest, combining strong geometry with luminous gold and intense mineral colour.
Inspired by this tradition, the Echoes of Time choker is formed from five graduated layers of up cycled antique beads, Afghan lapis lazuli, antique Yemeni black coral, handmade Yemeni Tut beads and gold-plated hematite. The layered construction creates the commanding silhouette of an Egyptian broad collar while remaining unmistakably contemporary.
The antique silver beads have been carefully cleaned, repaired and reassembled before receiving a warm gold-plated finish. This preserves the irregular forms and traces of their original craftsmanship while unifying the five layers in a rich golden tone.
Deep-blue lapis lazuli from Afghanistan brings the necklace its most striking colour. Lapis has been mined in Afghanistan’s Badakhshan region since antiquity and travelled along ancient trade routes into Mesopotamia and Egypt. Egyptian artisans treasured it for jewellery, amulets and inlay, pairing its celestial blue with gold to create some of the ancient world’s most recognisable colour combinations. Natural variations of lazurite, white calcite and occasional golden pyrite ensure that every bead is individual.
The antique Yemeni black coral, traditionally known as yusr, introduces depth and a quiet organic texture. These historic beads retain their natural markings, gentle wear and traces of former lives. They are joined by Yemeni Tut beads, traditionally constructed through granulation, with tiny silver spheres individually formed, arranged and soldered together by hand.
Hematite is a naturally iron-rich mineral known for its weight and metallic lustre. Here, the hematite beads have been gold plated, transforming their dense, reflective surfaces into points of warm light that move throughout the necklace and connect its five strands.
Finished with a gold-plated sterling silver clasp and extension chain, and accompanied by matching earrings, this modern version of historical adornment is designed to sit broadly and confidently across the collarbone.
