A bold meeting of Maasai beadwork, East African history and contemporary jewellery design, this one of a kind statement choker brings together objects and traditions that each carry their own story.
The foundation is traditional handmade Maasai beadwork, recognised for its striking colour, pattern and strong visual identity. Rather than altering the character of the original beadwork, SuhaniMara has upcycled and reimagined it, giving the piece a new life. We aim to support and celebrate the work of local Maasai artisans, while allowing their craftsmanship to become part of a contemporary piece that can be worn in a new way.
Suspended from the choker are 15 original domed East African one shilling coins, once part of the everyday currency of the region. The East African shilling was introduced in 1921 and became the official currency of Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika in 1922. The historic depicts a lion walking before Mt. Kenya, with EAST AFRICA above, imagery strongly associated with the region.
At SuhaniMara, old coins become storytellers. Paired with vibrant Maasai beadwork and reimagined as a contemporary choker, they bring together East Africa’s history and its living craft traditions.
Colourful, sculptural and distinctly African, each piece is unique, shaped by the hand-beading and the natural patina of the coins.
